Long before Facebook, or even MySpace, ArsDigita created some of the first social networking sites on the web. We also open-sourced our user management toolkit and taught courses at MIT, Caltech, Berkeley, and UCLA on web application development.

I contributed quite a few modules to the ArsDigita Community System (ACS) toolkit including online file storage, web-based chat, bookmark sharing, and bawdlerization.  I also code reviewed any of the modules submitted for inclusion in ACS.  

Even though ArsDigita is long gone, the toolkit lives on today as the OpenACS.
